About Marriage
"Two are better than one, because they have a
good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity
the man who falls and has no one to help him up! Also, if two lie down together, they will
keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can
defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly
broken" (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12).
"The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she
was taken out of man.' For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be
united to his wife, and they will become one flesh" (Genesis 2:23-24).
"Enjoy life with your wife, whom you love, all the days of
this meaningless life that God has given you under the sun-- all your meaningless days.
For this is your lot in life and in your toilsome labor under the sun" (Ecclestiastes
9:9).
"May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A
loving doe, a graceful deer-- may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be
captivated by her love. Why be captivated, my son, by an adulteress? Why embrace the bosom
of another man's wife?" (Proverbs 5:18-20).
"Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in
the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Submit to one another out of reverence for
Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the
wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the
church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to
make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present
her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but
holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own
bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated his own body,
but he feeds and cares for it, just as Christ does the church-- for we are members of his
body. For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,
and the two will become one flesh. This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about
Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves
himself, and the wife must respect her husband" (Ephesians 5:20-33).
"He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor
from the LORD" (Proverbs 18:22).
"Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, 'Is it
lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?' 'Haven't you read,' he
replied, 'that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For
this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two
will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined
together, let man not separate.' 'Why then,' they asked, 'did Moses command that a man
give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?' Jesus replied, 'Moses permitted
you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the
beginning. I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital
unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery' " (Matthew
19:3-9).
"But a man who commits adultery lacks judgment; whoever does
so destroys himself" (Proverbs 6:32).
"Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them" (Colossians 3:18-19).
"A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far
more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She
brings him good, not harm, all the days of her life. She selects wool and flax and works
with eager hands. She is like the merchant ships, bringing her food from afar. She gets up
while it is still dark; she provides food for her family and portions for her servant
girls. She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. She
sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. She sees that her
trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. In her hand she holds the
distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. She opens her arms to the poor and
extends her hands to the needy. When it snows, she has no fear for her household; for all
of them are clothed in scarlet. She makes coverings for her bed; she is clothed in fine
linen and purple. Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among
the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the
merchants with sashes. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days
to come. She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. She watches
over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children
arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women do
noble things, but you surpass them all." Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her the reward she has earned, and
let her works bring her praise at the city gate" (Proverbs 31:10-31).

Characteristics
of Love
"If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have
not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy
and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move
mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and
surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love
is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not
self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not
delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always
hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will
cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will
pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the
imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I
reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but
a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then
I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and
love. But the greatest of these is love" (1 Corinthians 13:1-13).
"But Ruth replied, "Don't urge me to leave you or to
turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people
will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be
buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates
you and me" (Ruth 1:16-17).
"My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends" (John
15:12-13).
"Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved,
clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.Bear with
each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as
the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all
together in perfect unity" (Colossians 3:12-14).
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there
is no law" (Galatians 5:22-23).
"But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure;
then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and
sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness" (James
3:17-18).

Romantic Love
"Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your
arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like
blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot wash it
away. If one were to give all the wealth of his house for love, it would be utterly
scorned" (Song of Songs 8:6-7).
"So Jacob served seven years to get Rachel, but they seemed
like only a few days to him because of his love for her" (Genesis 29:20).
Song of Songs, Chapter 2:
"I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys. Like a lily
among thorns is my darling among the maidens. Like an apple tree among the trees of the
forest is my lover among the young men.
I delight to sit in his shade, and his fruit is sweet to my
taste. He has taken me to the banquet hall, and his banner over me is love. Strengthen me
with raisins, refresh me with apples, for I am faint with love. His left arm is under my
head, and his right arm embraces me.
Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you by the gazelles and by the
does of the field: Do not arouse or awaken love until it so desires.
Listen! My lover! Look! Here he comes, leaping across the
mountains, bounding over the hills. My lover is like a gazelle or a young stag. Look!
There he stands behind our wall, gazing through the windows, peering through the lattice.
My lover spoke and said to me, "Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, and come with
me. See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the
season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. The fig tree forms
its early fruit; the blossoming vines spread their fragrance. Arise, come, my darling; my
beautiful one, come with me."
My dove in the clefts of the rock, in the hiding places on the
mountainside, show me your face, let me hear your voice; for your voice is sweet, and your
face is lovely. Catch for us the foxes, the little foxes that ruin the vineyards, our
vineyards that are in bloom.
My lover is mine and I am his; he browses among the lilies. Until
the day breaks and the shadows flee, turn, my lover, and be like a gazelle or like a young
stag on the rugged hills."
