King James Version
28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning
together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first
commandment of all?
29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord
our God is one Lord:
30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and
with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is
none other commandment greater than these.
32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one
God; and there is none other but he:
33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the
soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all
whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from
the kingdom of God.

28 One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and
recognizing that He had answered them well, asked
Him, What commandment is the foremost of all?
29 Jesus answered, The foremost is, "HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE
LORD;
30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL
YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.'
31 The second is this, "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is no other
commandment greater than these.
32 The scribe said to Him, Right, Teacher; You have truly stated that HE IS ONE, AND THERE
IS NO
ONE ELSE BESIDES HIM;
33 AND TO LOVE HIM WITH ALL THE HEART AND WITH ALL THE UNDERSTANDING AND
WITH ALL THE STRENGTH, AND TO LOVE ONE'S NEIGHBOR AS HIMSELF, is much more
than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.
34 When Jesus saw that he had answered intelligently, He said to him, You are not far from
the kingdom of
God.

28 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating.
Noticing that Jesus had given them a good
answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"
29 "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: `Hear, O Israel, the
Lord our God, the Lord is one.
30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your
mind and with all your
strength.'
31 The second is this: `Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment
greater than these."
32 "Well said, teacher," the man replied. "You are right in saying that God
is one and there is no other but him.
33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your
strength, and to love your
neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices."
34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from
the kingdom of God."
